Dr Diane Mckay of Tufts University in Boston who conducted a trial of hibiscus tea as a blood pressure lowering agent found that those subjects who consumed 3 cups of hibiscus tea every day for 6 weeks actually had a lower blood pressure after that period of time.
She also states that even small changes in blood pressure seen in studies such as hers can actually have a large impact in larger population studies as in so far as reducing risk of several mortalities including stroke and cardiovascular mortality.
When asked if the effects of the tea in the study where “in the ball park range of what you could expect to find with a single agent anti hypertensive therapy” the answer was “yes
