Our commitment to looking after the environment...
On average, every family in the UK consumes around 330 glass bottles and jars a year (source British Glass). Glass can be recycled indefinitely as part of a simple but hugely beneficial process, as its structure does not deteriorate when reprocessed.
Recycling two bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea. In order to do your bit please recycle used Hib! bottles into either a roadside collection scheme or your nearby bottle bank.
To find your nearest bottle bank you can use the recycle bank locator at http://www.recycle-more.com.
Recycling our Tetra Pak cartons
This may be a surprise but cartons are recyclable! They are also designed to have a minimum impact on the environment throughout their lifecycle and use less fossil fuel energy in production than some other forms of packaging. The UK is lagging behind other countries in the recycling of cartons but Tetra Pak are working hard to address this.
Visit www.tetrapakrecycling.co.ukfor more information and on interactive map to see if there are any carton recycling sites in your area.
If there are no sites in your area yet and you are keen to do your bit and start recycling cartons you can post your clean, dry and flattened cartons directly to the Tetra Pak collection site.
See their web site for address details. They also give you advice on how to encourage your local authority to engage with recycling cartons.
Recycling our plastic bottles
Our plastic bottles are made from a material called PET and the good news is that PET is 100% recyclable! PET bottles are partly recycled into fibres for textiles such as polar fleece, carpets and non-woven products, however the more recent ‘bottle to bottle’ recycling industry is growing rapidly.
In Britain we throw away about 455,000 tonnes of plastic bottles a year- that’s around 9.1 billion bottles! Many of these end up in landfill where, because plastic bottles are very light but very bulky, they take up lots of space. Plastic bottle recycling helps to stop filling up all these sites and just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W lightbulb for 6 hours!
In order to do your bit please recycle used Hib! bottles into either a roadside collection scheme or visit www.recycle-more.com for more information on your area.
